Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says he learns the most throughout his day by “lingering around” Microsoft Teams channels and making new connections.
  • Nadella pops into Teams channels with questions or comments and receives responses in return.
  • Apart from Teams channel conversations, Nadella spends his time in meetings for most of the day.

Satya Nadella has been CEO of Microsoft since 2014. A new interview brings to light what the executive does every day at the helm of the third-most-valuable company in the world — and he has an unusual habit of lurking around Microsoft Teams channels.

Nadella sat down with Stripe cofounder John Collison in a Tuesday episode of Stripe’s Cheeky Pint podcast. In response to a question about his normal day, Nadella said that he learns the most not from meetings, but from Teams channels, or dedicated spaces within a Microsoft Teams workspace to keep discussions organized. Team members can have focused conversations, collaborate and share files on a specific topic or project.

“It’s kind of all over for me,” Nadella said on the podcast. “I’m lingering around Teams channels, and they’re most helpful. In fact, if anything, I learn the most there, I meet the most people.”

Nadella said he often pops into Teams channels with questions or comments. He frequently receives honest feedback in return.

“It’s fun to be able to just go in there, and it sort of normalizes it,” Nadella said. “Today’s workforce is not shy of sharing their opinion with you.”

Nadella compared popping into Teams channels to wandering the halls of the company and entering meeting spaces. He said the channels are where he makes the most connections. He got to know the person working on an AI agent for Excel, for example.

“I learn so much out of it than anything else I’ve done,” Nadella said on the podcast.

Apart from conversations on Teams channels, Nadella mentioned that he’s in meetings or Teams calls for “most of the day.” At least two or three of those calls are with Microsoft’s customers.

“It’s sort of the most helpful way for me to stay most grounded, I would say,” Nadella said of the calls.

Nadella has “a lot” of time allotted for meetings, which he divided up into two categories: meetings that just require his presence and those that require his active participation, by communicating, learning or making a decision.

Nadella additionally makes it a point to visit startups, saying on the podcast that Microsoft is “good at” being where the startups are. He admitted to feeling awe at the prowess of founders who create “something from nothing.”

“It just sort of feels like a magic trick,” Nadella said.

Microsoft is one of the most valuable companies in the world, after Nvidia and Apple, with a market capitalization of $3.6 trillion. When Nadella first took charge, the company’s market value was closer to $380 billion.
